Edit: Another reason why, is that it's just "easier" to aquire casting gear than it is melee as a Wizard. Hence, if you're new to playing one, gearing for spell casting provides for a quicker return on investment. Alternative idea: Take 2 levels of Artificer and 18 Wizard. For the 1st 6 - 10 lvls, you can use the repeater for great effect.

Start with 1 EK, 6 PM (core 2 for PM form), 5 Harper and work your way to 12 Harper asap and go to EK from there.
