Looks like a pre-Model 38, if there is no model number stamped inside the yoke with the cylinder open. It should say Bodyguard Airweight on the barrel. If not, it should be a Model 49 Bodyguard. The airweight was an alloy frame that is much lighter than the 49. But, the 49 should be model stamped from the beginning.

I have a 38 S&W special ctg. Serial number starts with D. On the cylinder frame is the number 1309 3, under that is G12. Not sure exactly what it is or its value. …Serial numbers in and around the chamber also match. End of barrel to face of chamber is 4". Left side of barrel reads 38 S. & W. CTG. S&W made overruns into commercial guns after the war. They did that with the 1917s which were .45 calibre N frames. This probably was a 1917 frame with .44 barrel and cylinder made up after the War, as Bill suggests. Military guns were blued as well. I'm going to disagree with my friends on the value.

The second gun has a small vertical stub under the barrel with a trigger incorporated, no trigger guard at all. 3 inch barrel, looks like .38 as well. Serial #1034684. Same Smith and Wesson on top of the barrel as the other one but ends with a pat. date of May 11 18XX.
