Elements of the earth

Rare earth elements are a group of seventeen chemical elements that occur together in the periodic table (see image). The group consists of yttrium and the 15 lanthanide elements (lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, promethium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, and lutetium).

These elements originally referred to earth, water, air and fire rather than the chemical elements of modern science. The term 'elements' ( stoicheia ) was first used by the Greek philosopher Plato in about 360 BCE in his dialogue Timaeus , which includes a discussion of the composition of inorganic and organic bodies and is a speculative ... The Earth, on the other hand, consists almost entirely of the heavier elements. Helium is a very rare element on Earth, so rare in fact that it was first discovered as an unidentified line in the Sun’s spectrum in 1868, some 30 years before it was detected on Earth. Hydrogen is moderately abundant on Earth, largely because it combines Surface density: 1.217 kg/m 3. Scale height: 8.5 km. Total mass of atmosphere: 5.1 x 10 18 kg. Total mass of hydrosphere: 1.4 x 10 21 kg. Average temperature: 288 K (15 C) Diurnal temperature range: 283 K to 293 K (10 to 20 C) Wind speeds: 0 to 100 m/s. Mean molecular weight: 28.97.

Rare earth elements (REEs), which comprise of only 17 elements from the entire periodic table, play a critical role to our national security, energy independence, environmental future, and economic growth. Many advanced technologies have components made from REEs such as magnets, batteries, phosphors, and catalysts. Earth's inner core is the innermost geologic layer of the planet Earth. It is primarily a solid ball with a radius of about 1,220 km (760 mi), which is about 20% of Earth radius or 70% of the Moon's radius. There are no samples of Earth's core accessible for direct measurement, as there are for Earth's mantle. Rare-earth elements occur in nature in combination with phosphate ( monazite ), carbonate - fluoride ( bastnäsite ), and oxygen anions. In their oxides, most rare-earth elements only have a valence of 3 and form sesquioxides (cerium forms CeO2 ). Five different crystal structures are known, depending on the element and the temperature.

The lithosphere and asthenosphere are divisions of Earth based on mechanical properties. The three most abundant elements of Earth's crust are oxygen (46.6% by weight), silicon (27.7%), and aluminum (8.1%). The solid portion of the earth is called the Lithosphere. It comprises the rocks of the earth’s crust and the thin layers of soil that contain nutrient elements which sustain organisms. There ar e two main divisions of the earth’s sur face. The large landmasses are known as the continents and the huge water bodies are called the ocean basins .Rare earth elements (REEs) are essential for many modern technologies and industries, but they also pose significant environmental challenges. Diogenes Laertius described Empedocles’ doctrine of the physical world as: “His doctrines were as follows, that there are four elements, fire, water, earth and air, besides friendship by which these are united, and strife by which they are separated. When the chemical elements are thus arranged, there is a recurring pattern called the “periodic law” in their properties, in which elements in the same column (group ...

The magnetic field observed on Earth is constantly changing. The geomagnetic field measured at any point on the Earth's surface is a combination of several magnetic fields generated by various sources. These fields are superimposed on and interact with each other. More than 90% of the field measured is generated INTERNAL to the planet in the ...Grades. 5 - 12. The structure of the earth is divided into four major components: the crust, the mantle, the outer core, and the inner core. Each layer has a unique chemical composition, physical state, and can impact life on Earth's surface.
