James Naismith was a Canadian-American inventor of basketball, a physical educator, a physician, and a coach. He designed the game of basketball in 1891 while teaching at the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. He also founded the University of Kansas basketball program and coached Phog Allen, Adolph Rupp, and Dean Smith.
